AFROPUNK’s 2018 ‘RESIST’ campaign, needed a meaningful and memorable symbol, which could be ignited by the organisers, and spread by their community across social. The clenched, raised Fist; used by many resistance movements – from the Black Panthers, to local anti-apartheid efforts – was just the one. But, instead of just copy-pasting one from interwebz, the MMMob wanted to create one rooted in South Africa, with a story around it.

The MMMob Approach
Our friends at Kalashnikov Gallery in Joburg, recommended an artist from their stable, Isaac Zavale. We started the creation process, and documented it every step of the way. Isaac started by simply sketching the idea into existence. The iconic image needed to work as a negative too, so it could become a stencil, and be sprayed on walls across Jozi. A bit of tweaking and testing was required, to ensure the integrity of the stencil, and a standout image. When it got the thumbs up, Isaac could begin the process of making the Lino master.
But, with every resistance movement there are obstacles – and in our case, it was Isaac dislocating his shoulder. Everyone really wanted him to see the process through, and so MMM waited as long as we possibly could for his injury to heal, so he could continue and finish what he had started. This left just enough time for the Lasercut Specialist and Sticker Printers to do their work, and deliver just in time for the MMMob’s “Stencils & Stickers Campaign”, in the leadup to the Festival.
